2007 Frankfurt Preview: Peugeot 308RC Z Concept Car
As it prepares to launch its new 308 compact range across Europe, Peugeot has lifted the covers on a 308-based concept for the Frankfurt Auto Show.
Deemed to be of one the show’s most intriguing premiers, the 308 RC Z previews a compact size 2+2 coupe based on the 308 hatch that will quite possibly go into production as a cheaper alternative to the Audi TT Coupe.
While the company points out that the aim of the RC Z, like any concept, is "to pioneer technical and styling ideas free from the constraints of volume production", the fact that it shares so many components with the existing hatchback hints that the RC Z might be quite close to production-ready. So the response it receives at Frankfurt, the world's largest motor show, could be very telling.
Powering the 308RC X is a high-output version of the twin-cam, direct-injection four-cylinder gas engine that was jointly developed with PSA and BMW. The turbocharged 1.6-liter engine now makes 218 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque and is mated to a newly designed six-speed manual gearbox.
Matted to a 6speed manual gearbox the lightweight 308 RC Z sprints from standstill to 100 km/h (62mph) in 7,0 sec and from 0 to 1.000m (62,3 miles) in 27,0 sec with a maximum top speed of 235 km/h (146 mph). According to Peugeot, the 308 RC Z features an avg. consumption of just 6,7lt per 100 km which translates to impressive 35,1mpg in combined city/highway driving.
The car rides on Michelin Pilot Sport tires (245/40R19) mounted on 19-inch alloy wheels.
Peugeot has kept the weight low by using a carbon-fiber roof panel, polycarbonate rear glass, and LED taillamps, among other lightweight body parts.
Inside, the cockpit is trimmed in leather, chrome, aluminum and black-lacquered plastic. Highlights include a precision Bell & Ross clock in the center stack and leather bucket seats trimmed with polished aluminum eyelets.
Safety has also been a focus, with a lane departure warning system, impact protection structures and an in-built emergency beacon that alerts the local emergency services in the event of an accident.
