Phone Booths to Recharge Electric Vehicles in Spain

Spanish companies Endesa and Telefonica on Wednesday unveiled a phone box in which users can both make a phone call and recharge the battery of an electric vehicle.

Endesa and Telefonica have signed an agreement to develop a technological solution using Telefonica's phone booths as EV recharging points. The aim is to promote sustainable mobility and enable users to recharge their vehicles on public thoroughfares. This project, which uses pre-paid cards, will also provide information on usage and consumption.

The cabin in a Madrid suburb close to the headquarters of the Spanish telecommunications giant Telefonica has the appearance of a normal telephone box but is also equipped with electric sockets that can be used for recharging.

Reserved parking spaces will be located next to this and all other booths set up in Metropolitan areas where users will be able to park their electric vehicles and recharge at no cost once they have obtained their free "zero emissions" pre-paid card from the Madrid city council.

Spain's government wants to see up to 250,000 electric vehicles on the country's roads by 2014.

Earlier this month, Telekom Austria said it will turn its old telephone boxes into recharging stations for electric vehicles.
