Peugeot has started to take pre-reservations for its i0n electric car developed in co-operation with the Mitsubishi.

The French carmaker has already signed letters of intent with a number of companies and local authorities across Europe, for the vehicle to become part of their car-sharing and vehicle fleets.

For individual customers, pre-bookings are open on the websites of Peugeot Germany, Great Britain, Spain, France and Italy.

With four doors and four seats, a compact length of 3.48 m and a turning circle of 4.50 m, the Peugeot i0n develops a maximum power output of 64 bhp and a torque of 180 Nm, with maximum speed of 81 mph (130km/h).

The i0n has an operating range of 81 miles (130km) on a single charge. Its lithium-ion batteries can be charged in 6 hours using a conventional 220V socket or up to 80% in 30 minutes via a fast charging system.

Peugeot says that on-board it will also include some innovative functions, thanks in particular to the "localized communication unit" which authorizes data transfer (battery status, distance covered, distance to travel before maintenance is due, etc…) thus providing assistance especially for fleet operators.

i0n will feature ABS, traction control, ESP and six airbags as well as electric windows, air conditioning and a range of audio equipment.

In September PSA Peugeot Citroen and Mitsubishi signed a deal to develop electric cars for both Peugeot and Citroen based on i-MiEV. Peugeot introduced the i0n at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, while Citroen unveiled its version -- the C-ZERO electric car, earlier this week.

Peugeot has a long history in electric vehicles and, with the Peugeot 106 Electric which was produced between 1995 and 2003, remains to this day the manufacturer who has sold the most “zero emission” electric vehicles in the world.
