Nissan Claims 367mpg for Leaf EV

Nissan claims 367 mpg under the same formula for its Leaf electric car, which has has no gas engine or tank, and has a range of about 100 miles on a full battery charge.

The Japanese automaker isn't impressed by the GM’s claim that the Chevy Volt will get 230 mpg in city driving.

These fuel economy numbers are based on a yet to be approved draft calculation of how energy efficiency will be determined for fuel efficient cars. Thus the EPA has created a way to convert fuel consumption from kilowatt-hours per 100 miles (kW-h/100mi) to miles per gallon.

The EPA has not tested GM's and Nissan’s claims and can't confirm the fuel-economy figures.

Nissan, which unveiled the LEAF in Japan earlier this month has committed to sales starting late next year of 5,000 LEAF electric cars in the United States for test purposes.

The Japanese automaker plans to sell the LEAF electric car for somewhere between $25,000 to $33,000, which is slightly more than the current price of the Prius but up to 15,000 dollars less than the expected cost of the GM’s Volt plug-in hybrid.
