Japanese largest utility firm Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) is teaming up with Nissan, Mitsubishi and Fuji Heavy Industries to expand and standardize a grid of battery-charging stations for electric cars.

The four companies said they were 'aiming to standardize the power charge method and to popularize fast-speed charge stations, which are absolutely essential in promoting electric vehicles in Japan.'

The three automakers have separately developed lithium-ion batteries together with TEPCO for their electric vehicles, which started hitting the market this year.

Earlier this week, Nissan presented LEAF - its first electric car, a 110-horsepower car powered by lithium-ion batteries.

Mitsubishi Motors and Fuji Heavy have also launched their own electric cars, the i-MiEV and Subaru Stella models, respectively.
