LG Chem will sell hybrid cars batteries to Ford from 2012, with annual sales projected at up to 500bn won (US$447m).

Exact battery sales will depend on how many hybrid cars the U.S. No.2 automaker sells, local media reported.

LG Chem plans to spend 1 trillion won (US$800 million) to build an electric-car battery plant over the next four years.

The company aims to increase its global market share in the electric-car battery sector to over 20 percent until 2015.

LG Chem will supply GM with li-ion battery cells, electronic components and control hardware.

South Korea's No.1 chemicals company will also supply lithium-ion batteries for hybrid vehicles set to be launched next month by
South Korea's top carmaker Hyundai Motor.
