Google Developing Smart Charging Software

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Google is reportedly developing smart charging software that will deal with the future energy grid problems that plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and electric vehicles could cause.

There is some fear that millions of PHEVs and electric vehicles charging at the peak times could cause a real drain on the grid.

Google's smart charging software uses "vehicle dispatch algorithms" to decide how to best charge the cars. The software is also designed to simplify matters for grid operators.

The vehicle dispatch algorithms work better with solar and power, which will be variable sources of electricity in the future.

In his talk at the Kema Utility of the Future conference, Dan Reicher, Google's director of climate change and energy initiatives, said that Google engineers are also working on a number of other energy-related research and development projects in an effort to make renewable energy less expensive.
