Tata May Sell Nano Rights to Other Companies
Tata Motors may allow other car companies to assemble its low-cost Nano and sell it under their own brand.
Speaking at The Economist Innovation conference in London on Friday, Tata Motors Vice-Chairman and former managing director Ravi Kant said with the new Nano plant likely to start commercial production in the last quarter of this financial year ending March 2010, the company may allow enterprising assemblers to set up micro-assembly sites across the country, with each producing some 10,000 cars a year.He said the car companies wouldn't have to sell it under the Tata brand, and they could sell it under their own name as part of the agreement.
Tata is building a dedicated facility for the Nano with an annual capacity of 250,000 units, which is expected to be ready by the end of March. Until then, it is making the Nano in smaller numbers at an existing plant.
The Tata Nano is the world's cheapest car and it went on sale in India in July. The company has delivered more than 7500 units till now.
