The new 2011 Volkswagen Jetta has been unveiled at Times Square in New York, featuring a sharp new look, greater space and the most advanced range of gasoline and diesel engines yet.

Drawing inspiration from the popular NCC (New Compact Coupé) concept car which made its debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January, the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta was styled under the leadership of Klaus Bischoff, head of design for the Volkswagen brand.

Every panel is new with precise, clean lines lending the 2011 Jetta an elegant appearance that marks the latest evolution of the new Volkswagen design language.

At 182.7-inches long, 57.1 inches tall and 70.1 inches wide, the 2011 Jetta is more than 3.5 inches longer than its predecessors.

At a starting price point of around $16,000, the new 2011 Jetta will be available in the U.S. this October.

The North American version of the all-new 2011 Jetta features the powerful and efficient German engineering drivers have come to expect from Volkswagen. Four engines will be available in the U.S. and Canada, including a 2.0-liter turbodiesel direct injection (TDI) Clean Diesel featuring common rail injection with 236 lbs-ft. of torque (320 Newton-meters). The engine runs as quietly as a gasoline engine, but yields the power of a sports car achieving 0-60 mph in 8.7 seconds.Additional engines include the 2.0, 2.5 R5, and as of 2011, the 2.0 TSI.

All Jetta engines will be offered with a manual transmission as standard equipment. An automatic transmission will also be available with each engine version as an option. On the new 2.0-liter TDI and 2.0-liter TSI, Volkswagen will offer the 6-speed DSG - one of the most advanced and efficient automatic transmission systems in the world. In the U.S., S, SE, SEL and TDI versions of the Jetta will be available, as will a 2.0-liter GLI.

In
Europe, the 2011 Jetta will be powered with the 1.2-liter TSI engine producing 105 PS while the twincharged 1.4-liter TSI 160 PS engine mixing performance and economy is added to the range.  The 1.4-liter TSI 122 PS and 2.0-liter TSI 200 PS continue unchanged.  Diesel options consist of a 1.6-liter TDI 105 PS and a 2.0-liter TDI 140 PS engine.

As with the outgoing Jetta, the new car mixes the practicality of being able to seat five adults with a large, 510 liter loadspace and a comprehensive range of standard safety features including six airbags, ABS and Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP).

The original Jetta was launched in
Germany in 1979 with over 9.6 million vehicles sold with the nameplate since then.

Sustained popularity in the US market has led the Jetta to become the biggest selling German car in North America where it accounts for 110,000 sales every year.
