Sanyo Electric Co. will supply nickel-metal hydride batteries for PSA Peugeot Citroen Group's diesel-electric hybrid cars starting in 2011.

Under the deal with the PSA Group, Sanyo will provide nickel-metal hydride cells for Peugeot 3008 crossover and the Citroen DS5 models which the French carmaker plans to launch in 2011.

Sanyo plans to ship batteries for several tens of thousands of cars per year, the NIkkei reported.

Sanyo has been aggressively expanding the hybrid battery business with a policy of not tying up with specific automakers.

The Japanese firm currently supplies nickel-metal hydride batteries to Honda and Ford for vehicles sold in the North American market and reportedly plans to supply
Toyota as well.

Sanyo has also agreed on joint lithium-ion battery development with German's Volkswagen AG.
