SB LiMotive, a joint venture between Samsung SDI and Germany’s Robert Bosch, is acquiring 100 percent of US battery maker Cobasys, Samsung SDI said on Tuesday.

Chevron, the main shareholder of Cobasys, also announced the sale on Tuesday.

Cobasys develops energy storage systems for hybrid-electric vehicles and is owned by Chevron and Energy Conversion Devices. Last year, General Motors was reported to be considering acquiring the company. Cobasys supplies batteries for GM’s mild hybrid systems.

Samsung SDI stated that it plans to build Cobasys into SB LiMotive's North American centre. SB LiMotive started operations in September 2008 and expects to begin making battery cells next year.

Established in 1960, Cobasys develops and produces energy storage systems for electric vehicles.
