Ontario Offers up to $10K Incentives for PHEVs

Ontario's government announced a plan to offer purchasers of plug-in hybrids and electric cars incentives of up to $10,000 in a bid to make the green cars more accessible to the average consumer.

Under a plan announced by Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, drivers will receive rebates of between $4,000 and $10,000 ($3,600 to $8,900 US dollars) for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles purchased after July 1, 2010.

The plan is part of the province's attempts to boost the struggling auto sector and position itself at the forefront of the emerging technology.

In a statement, Premier Dalton McGuinty said the plan “helps get more people behind the wheel of a green vehicle to create jobs, reduce smog and equip Ontario for the 21st century.”

Ontario’s electric-vehicle strategy also calls for the development of a charging infrastructure and fleet purchases by provincial government agencies. Electric vehicles will also be given green license plates and will be eligible to use high-occupancy vehicle lanes at any time, even if there’s only one person in the car.

Ontario will also add 500 electric vehicles to the Ontario Public Service fleet. The plan also includes a promise to ensure that plug-in or electric cars will make up 20 percent of the government's fleet by 2020.

Expanding the use of electric vehicles by consumers and government will help create and sustain jobs in the auto sector and put Ontario at the forefront of the new, green economy in North America.
