Colorado Offers $42,000 Tax Credit to Tesla Buyers
Colorado is offering a $42,083 tax credit on the 2009 Tesla Roadster, a 39 percent discount on the $109,000 Roadster until December 31st.
The amount of the tax credit is based on a percentage of the difference between the alternative fuel vehicle and a comparable, gas-burning vehicle. In the case of the Tesla Roadster, that's the $47,000 Lotus Elise. Most of the state's clean-car tax credits go to owners of hybrid vehicles, whose break ranges from 50 percent to 75 percent of the difference in cost between their cars and comparable gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicles.
A fact sheet put of by the Taxpayer Service Division of the Colorado Department of Revenue lists the lot of them.
The tax credit for Ford Escape Hybrid is $3,906, for a Toyota Prius is a comparatively paltry $3,110, the tax break for a Honda Civic Hybrid is $2,640, while the tax credit for Lexus LS 600 hybrid is $20,392.
